LIST OF EMERGING COUNTRIES WITH NUCLEAR POWER AMBITIONS

These past three years alone we witnessed a series of regime changes in highly unstable countries in the Middle East.

Governments fell like dominoes in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, while others tottered under the onslaught of the Arab Spring.

Syria is still in the midst of a war and we don't know who will end up owning the biological and chemical weapons arsenal in that country.  (The deal to hand over WMD now only applies to chemical weapons, not biological ones.  Those Assad gets to keep.)

But that is not enough.  These countries also have high ambitions to become nuclear powers.

Once a government gets access to energy nuclear reactors, acquiring nuclear weapons is only a matter of time.

And then there's the issue of nuclear proliferation.  Pakistan exported nuclear technology to North Korea, for example.

So here is an updated list of how things stand right now, with a list of emerging nations pursuing nuclear technology - often eagerly provided by western countries such as Canada.

  • Over 45 countries are actively considering embarking upon nuclear power programs.
  • These range from sophisticated economies to developing nations.
  • The front runners after Iran are UAE, Turkey, Vietnam, Belarus, Poland and Jordan.
